THE CAFKA BIENNIAL EXHIBITION

Every two years CAFKA - Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area produces an exhibition of contemporary visual art projects in the public spaces of the Waterloo Region. Since 2001 contemporary artists from across Canada, the United States and overseas have exhibited next to some of the best local artists in the Waterloo Region.

Contemporary Artists From Across Canada and Around the World

Each edition of the CAFKA biennial takes on an over-arching theme, reflecting aesthetic and conceptual issues addressed by artists in their projects. By having artists from across Canada and around the world participate, common themes and issues are explored from diverse social and cultural perspectives. CAFKA is surprising, unexpected and very public. Installations, projections and performances take place throughout the public spaces of the Region. People looking for CAFKA projects will use the exhibition guide like a treasure hunter’s map. Thousands more will encounter CAFKA projects unexpectedly, in the course of shopping, commuting to work or strolling in the park.

Education

An important aspect of CAFKA is our educational program. Between biennials, CAFKA, with its partner Musagetes, produces the Big Ideas in Art and Culture lecture series. Each year we host three to four speakers — outstanding artists and thinkers from across Canada and around the world — whose work is on the theoretical and practical edge of culture and public space. And during the biennial CAFKA organizes bus tours, school tours and workshops, pub crawls and bike tours. In 2016, CAFKA produced 26 tours and workshops  that included 643 children and adults.

Community Support

CAFKA is proud to have the support of individual donors, sponsors, municipal governments and federal and provincial agencies and of its many dedicated volunteers, who contribute to make the CAFKA biennial free of charge and accessible to all. Join us in bringing some of the most original contemporary art to the public spaces of the Waterloo Region in 2018.
