“The mirror does not flatter, it faithfully shows whatever looks into it; namely, the face we never show to the world because we cover it with the persona, the mask of the actor.” Carl Jung, Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious
Where is that face, and what does it look like when the mask comes off? That answer may not be available – and if it’s not – then let us consider the mask.
For their second Parable, Colin Labadie and Jordan Mandel have designed a situation which shines at a certain angle to reveal the contours and edges of the mask you craft, the mask you wear, the mask you project, the mask which is your project. From behind this mask you find safety, routine, comfort. And from behind this mask you find the fundamental experience of disconnection.
Of distance.
Reflecting the manner of a persona, Parable II is a generative construction which takes shape, grows, and transforms throughout the course of the festival, and invites multiple interactions, for each will be with a maturing persona.
To prepare your experience, we begin with a question to consider, to explore, to let ferment, to let grow:
What is your mask?
